Do you own a Chihuahua who's shedding uncontrollably? While this tiny dog breed is known for their love, loyalty and energy, they're also known to shed often. However, there are certain precautions owners can take to help reduce the amount of hair they shed, as well as ways to better manage their shedding.

Before trying to deal with your Chihuahuas excessive hair-shedding, you should know that all dogs shed. Sure, it would be nice if our indoor dogs didn't leave us their hair on the furniture and floor, but they do, and dealing with it is a part of being a dog owner.

There are two different breeds of Chihuahua – the long-cat and short-coat. Typically both of these breeds will shed, but the long-coat does so more often and with a greater amount of hair.

While some shedding is usually a natural occurrence, it's possible there's an underlying issue about why they are shedding so much. It should go without saying that premium dog food is better for your Chihuahua. It supplies them with vital nutrients which keep them healthy both inside and outside on their coat. Owners who feed their Chihuahuas low-quality food have reported more frequent shedding along with other negative side effects. To be on the safe side, always give your Chihuahua premium dog food.

Another possible reason your Chihuahua is shedding excessively could be related to an allergic reaction. If your Chihuahua comes into contact with an allergen, it could produce side effects, one of which is hair loss. If you believe this is the case, take them to the veterinarian to get checked out.

Nearly every dog breed will shed more during certain parts of the year. While the cause of this is unknown, most Chihuahuas tend to shed more during the Spring months. Some people believe it's preparing them for their winter coat or possibly hormonal changes associated with the season.

No matter what type of Chihuahua you have, grooming should stay a top priority. Not only will it help keep them clean and healthy, but it will also prevent them from shedding as much. Stay on top of your Chihuahuas professional grooming appointments, but also do your own at-home grooming. Everyday, take a soft-bristle brush and give your Chihuahuas coat a thorough brushing. Simply by doing this you will eliminate 90% of their shedding. Here's a tip when brushing your Chihuahua – be gentle and give them a treat afterwards. This will make it a more enjoyable experience for the both of you.

Bathing will also help reduce the amount of hair shed by your Chihuahua, however you need to do it correctly. Run a bath for your Chihuahua and thoroughly massage their hair and body as you run in the shampoo. Next, gently grab any free hair that's made its way to the top of their coat. Rinse them off and you now have a hair-free Chihuahua!

Dealing with shed hair is part of owning a Chihuahua. Thankfully, though, there are certain actions we can take to better manage their shedding.
