Most people when hearing the name of the very popular Japanese dog breed, Shiba Inu, for the first time are puzzled. Until quite recently the Shiba dog was relatively unheard of. That trend seems to be changing as more people become acquainted with these captivating Japanese puppies.

Who Are These Cute Japanese puppies called Shiba Inu's?

Shiba dogs come to us from Japan where they are the most popular dog of all breeds there. They are the smallest of the Japanese native breeds and from the same family as the better known Akita, here in the US. At the end of World War II, Shiba dogs were close to extinction. Fortunately the three main blood lines were merged to create the adorable Japanese puppies we see today.

Shiba Puppies and Shiba Dogs – A Joy To Behold

These captivating, ultra cute Japanese puppies resemble a teddy bear when young. They are virtually impossible to resist. With their upright teddy bear ears, somewhat slanted eyes and very huggable fluffy fur, it's easy to see why Shiba puppies are irresistible to both look at and avoid cuddling.

What do these captivating Shiba puppies look like when they inevitably grow up to become Shiba dogs?

They are considered a small dog, usually weighing between 15 to 25 pounds and measuring between 13 to 16 inches in height. They are bright eyed and bushy tailed! In fact their tail has a curl to it that you will surely love! They come primarily in three colors: red, black & tan and white, although there are some variations. They have a double layered coat that sheds seasonally, but is easy to brush.

What Kind of Personality Does A Shiba Inu Have?

Shiba dogs are sweet, lively and quite intelligent. They are energetic, agile and love to run. Shiba Inu's grow from the cute Japanese puppies described above to graceful, bold, proud looking adult dogs.

Adult Shiba dogs are often described as having a cat like quality in the way they move as well as a slightly superior attitude. That said, they are very affectionate with their families as well as loyal and protective. They make excellent watch dogs, despite their small, compact size.
